Expert Tips and Tricks to Pass Your CDL Exam the First Time

February 6, 2025

At New Sound, we know the CDL exam like the back of our hand. Seriously. We’ve trained countless students into successful drivers of semi-trucks, box-trucks, passenger buses, dump trucks—you name it! Getting your CDL opens the door to job opportunities in all kinds of industries, but it's required that you first complete a recognized training program in order to qualify for taking the CDL exam. That’s where we come in! Our school makes CDL test preparation easy, accessible, and affordable, but we’ll go over more of that later.

First, we want to give you the tips and tricks that we’ve learned that will help you pass the CDL exam on your first try. Our trainers are experienced drivers themselves, with decades on the road in all sorts of heavy equipment and commercial vehicles in multiple countries. They’ve been through this whole process themselves and have helped students achieve an 80% first-time pass rate, so their advice is worth more than gold.

That being said, here are the best training and testing tips from some of Washington’s most seasoned CDL experts.

CDL Exam Tips and Tricks

Passing your CDL exam is all about preparation. Our school offers comprehensive courses for each of the following: Class A Manual, Class A Automatic, Class B, and Class Upgrades. There are some content and requirement differences among the classes, but the tips that we’ll be sharing apply to any of them! Here’s what you need to know:

1. Get the Commercial Driver Guide (CDL Manual)

This guide, often just called the CDL manual, can overwhelm you very quickly. There are 171 pages of content in it, so having a team like ours direct you to the important information is key. Everything on the knowledge test will be in this book, so make sure you get a copy and begin reviewing it. Once you join our training program, we’ll teach you section by section and focus on the key topics like road signs, safety rules, and vehicle operation. Become familiar with it ahead of time to get a headstart on your training.

2. Take CDL Practice Tests

Taking practice tests will help you get comfortable with the questions that you’ll see on the CDL exam. Take notes on which areas you struggle with and spend extra time studying them. This is another aspect of our program that will give you a leg up, with our instructors always ready to answer any of your questions until you master these practice tests.

3. Take Advantage of Hands-On Training

Approach your CDL program with the mindset of becoming a skilled driver, not just a good test-taker. Our courses will give you the opportunity to handle semi-trucks and commercial vehicles in supervised and controlled situations. Make the most of this training by taking your time behind the wheel and paying attention to any direction or correction given by instructors. Don’t be intimidated by the trucks and understand that practice makes perfect. At New Sound CDL School, our equipment and lot is new, clean, and dedicated to your training and success. You’ll receive as much hands-on practice as you need to be confident in your new career.

4. Listen to Your Instructors

Your instructors are there to help. Ask questions, take notes, and follow their advice. They’ve been in your shoes and know exactly what it takes to pass the CDL exam. They are your most valuable resource, so make the most of them!

5. Stay Calm

This is always easier said than done, but don’t let yourself get overwhelmed. Our team is committed to providing you with everything you need to succeed, so don’t hesitate to reach out for extra help or advice. We won’t let you fail. When test day comes, take a deep breath and remember that you’ve already done all of it before. Trust your training, stay positive, and take it one step at a time.

Do’s and Don’ts During CDL Training

Do’s

  1. Ask Questions: If you don’t understand something, speak up! Your instructors are there to help. Our school is proud of our welcoming and helpful multilingual staff, where you can get help in your primary language, whether Spanish, Russian, or Ukrainian!
  2. Practice Every Day: The more you practice, the better you’ll get. Remember that consistency is key! Make sure to commit some time every day to review what you’ve been learning.
  3. Stay Organized: Keep track of your training materials, schedule, and goals. Being prepared and organized will make your training less stressful.
  4. Stay Positive: CDL training can be tough, but a good attitude will make it easier! Celebrate your progress and recognize that you’re still learning.

Don’ts

  1. Don’t Skip Practice: Even if you feel confident, every practice session will help. Don’t forget that consistency is key.
  2. Don’t Compare Yourself to Others: Everyone learns at their own pace. Focus on yourself and remember that it's not a competition. You’ll get it with time!
  3. Don’t Ignore Feedback: Listen to your instructors’ advice and use it to improve. They’re experienced experts both on the road and in the classroom; trust them!
  4. Don’t Procrastinate: Start studying and practicing as soon as possible. Waiting until the last minute will add unnecessary stress. Remind yourself that your goal is to become a great driver, not to just pass a test.

How to Master the Hardest Part of the CDL Exam

The pre-trip inspection is often the most difficult part of the exam for students. Why? It requires a lot of memorization and attention to detail. We put together a helpful guide and video for the in-cab portion that will walk you through it, but here’s some additional advice:

1. Learn the Checklist

The pre-trip inspection checklist includes everything you need to inspect, from the brakes to the tires. Break it into smaller sections and review it every day, walking through the steps physically (even if you have to pretend).

2. Practice Out Loud

During the test, you’ll need to explain each step of the inspection to the examiner. Always say it out loud while you check the truck and whenever you practice. This will help you remember the steps and will build your confidence for when you do have to talk the examiner through the inspection.

3. Use Memory Tricks

Acronyms and other tricks can make it easier to remember what to check. For example, use "LTC" for lights, tires, and coupling. Come up with your own and have fun with it; it’ll be easier to remember that way!

4. Practice on a Real Truck

The best way to prepare is by practicing on the same type of truck you’ll use for the test. At New Sound CDL School, we provide hands-on pre-trip training so you’ll know exactly what to expect and can practice until you master it.

5. Take Your Time

Don’t rush through the inspection. Be thorough and explain each step as clearly as possible to the examiner. If you show an attention to detail, it will be a bonus for you.
